Bricks have numerous applications in the field of civil engineering. They are widely used in construction as both structural and non-structural (aesthetic) elements. Bricks are used as structural members in the construction of walls, retaining walls, arches, claddings, and so on, and as non-structural members, they can be used as fillers and for ornamental purposes.

In order to serve its purpose, it is usually preferable to use high-quality bricks. Uniformity in colour, size, and shape, sound and compact, free of cracks, compressive strength between 15 and 35 MPa, durability, non-inflammable, and incombustible are all desirable brick characteristics.
